Tony -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Update on Geospatial Platform Activities Date: Wed, 02 Feb 2011 10:28:12 -0500 From: Siderelis, Karen To: excom@fgdc.gov CC: Tony.LaVoi , Nebert, Douglas D , david.mcclure@gsa.gov , sanjeev.bhagowalia@gsa.gov ExCom Colleagues, This is a note to update you on the issues that we discussed at the January 26 ExCom meeting and at Monday's meeting of the Geospatial Platform Core team, ExCom, and other invited attendees. 1. Geospatial Platform Version 0 GSA has plans for issuing an RFP for initial Data.gov/GOS migration/Geospatial Platform capabilities, which are proceeding at a fast pace. This is an opportunity to implement Version 0 of the Geospatial Platform that we can consider as a proof-of-concept and as a basis for getting feedback on the requirements for the Geospatial Platform in the long run. GSA has asked that we provide any comments on the draft Statement of Work and high-level architectural view by this Friday (Feb. 4). Jerry Johnston has agreed to take the lead in consolidating our comments and will be reaching out to the members of the ExCom and the Technical Deployment Task Team (TDTT) this week. Please provide any comments to Jerry by noon on Thursday, February 3. We recognize the short turn-around on this request but want to take advantage of the opportunity to collaborate with GSA and advance the Geospatial Platform. Thanks to the ExCom members and subject matter experts who have been able to respond on such a short quick turn-around to leverage this opportunity. The draft documents are attached below (many of you have already seen the drafts). Please limit distribution of these drafts to Federal employees as they are procurement sensitive. Jerry Johnston also will be asking each of the ExCom agencies about possible FY 11 funding contributions to support the tasks in the GSA contract. Several agencies have already identified possible funding contributions. We are hoping to provide GSA with preliminary numbers by February 4 also. We will keep you posted as this effort continues to quickly evolve. We will provide a status report to the Coordination Group at their meeting scheduled for next Tuesday, February 8. The Platform session is tentatively scheduled for 1:00 PM. I encourage ExCom members to participate in this discussion, if you are available. We will send out additional information about the CG meeting later this week. We appreciate the strong leadership from GSA and the partnership opportunity that we have through this initiative. I encourage you to provide your input and help us work together to take full advantage of this opportunity. 2. Capabilities Assessment Task Team One of the actions we discussed was the creation of a new task team to initiate a capabilities assessment of Federal agency data, services, and applications that are ready, or soon to be ready, for inclusion as components of the Geospatial Platform. While the approach and methodology are still being developed, the intent is to begin with an analysis of existing inventory responses, and data holdings such as GOS, and work with ExCom agencies (as a starting point) to verify and identify potential Geospatial Platform candidate data and services. In order to stand up this team in the near-term, we are looking to identify a project lead and a Champion from the ExCom. If you would be willing to volunteer as the Champion for this effort, or if you have suggestions on a possible team lead and members, please let me know. As a next step, Ken Shaffer is drafting a project outline for this effort. We will share additional information shortly. 3. Project Management Office As we move forward in our discussions about the Managing Partner role, we will also be asking for your agency's input on the possible FY 11 funding contributions and/or in-kind or FTE contributions to support the project management function for the Geospatial Platform. Please let me know your preliminary thinking on support of a PMO by February 14. Thank you for your continuing work on these initiatives. Please let me know if you have any questions.
