<abstract>
The Census 2000 Block Maps depict the extent and bounds of
geographic entities for which the U.S. Census Bureau presents
data from Census 2000. The smallest of these entities is the
census block, an area enclosed by physical features such as
streets or waterways. In some cases nonvisible features such
as legal boundaries form block boundaries. The maps show each
block with its number and identify the features forming its
boundary. The boundaries, names, and codes of American Indian
areas/Alaska Native areas/Hawaiian home lands, counties, county
subdivisions, places, and census tracts are also shown. A set of
Census 2000 Block Maps has been produced for each county, each
county subdivision, each place (both incorporated places and
Census Designated Places), and each consolidated city in the
United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas of the United
States. In areas where counties, county subdivisions, or places
do not exist, map sets have been prepared for entities that are
considered statistically equivalent to them. Each map set consists
of one or more numbered parent sheets that cover the entire entity.
If necessary, separate inset sheets show areas of dense features at
a larger scale. Inset areas are identified with letters. If the
set has more than one parent sheet, an index sheet is also included
which depicts the arrangement of the parent sheets and inset areas
in relation to the entity boundary and selected major features. All
of the parent sheets within an entity are produced at the same scale,
while maps for adjacent entities may be at different scales. The
objective of each map set is to use the smallest number of sheets
while preserving legibility of geographic entity names and feature
identifiers. The physical size of the entity and the density of
features also affects the number of parent sheets and insets.
